Power India found that Norwegian Government seems very keen to increase the co-operation with India in the Hydro Power Sector. The Norwegian Embassy had organised a meeting of about 80 experts from 35 companies to discuss hydro power.
Norway meets most of its electricity needs from hydro power sources.
Ann Ollestad, Nrwegian Ambassador to India said:
"For more than 100 years, Norway's electricity has come from clean hydro power. Around 97 percent of our national electricity now comes from hydro. Norway cooperates with India on Renewable Energy generation through trade and investment, and support to off-grid village electrification."
The meeting was also attended by G Sai Prasad, Joint Secretary at the Power Ministry, according to a statement issued by the Norwegian Embassy.
According to Geir Elsebutangen (representing the Norwegian firm INTPOW - Norwegian Renewable Energy Partners)
The vibrant debate at the Embassy witnessed huge interest for further cooperation and competence sharing between India and Norway in the hydropower sector. We see special interest in Norwegian investment in tunnelling, planning, trade, pricing and financing. There is also a need for direct dialogue between companies and authorities."
Norway's SN Power already has two operating plants in India together with LNJ Bhilwara, having a combined capacity of 301 MW. The firm along with Tata Power is also developing a hydro power project in Himachal Pradesh.
