Government Hospitals in Hyderabad to be powered by the Solar Energy...

Government Hospitals in Hyderabad to be powered by the Solar Energy...

The sun will soon begin to illuminate a few government hospitals in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, thanks to the solar power initiatives taken by the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) with the active support of the Central and state governments.

As part of promoting non-conventional energy, governments would provide funds to install solar power equipment soon in the city government hospitals like Osmania,  Gandhi, Fever and Niloufer Hospitals with a main objective to reduce pressure on conventional sources of energy.

NREDCAP managing director M Kamalakar Babu said that in Osmania General Hospital, solar power equipment generating 500 and 400 kw would be installed while 500 kw in Gandhi Hospital, 100 kw in Fever Hospital and 150 kw in Niloufer Hospital would be installed. Solar photovoltaic devices will be installed not only for lighting requirements but also for other medical uses.

The decision to install solar power equipment in these government hospitals was taken due to heavy consumption of power as thousands of patients keep thronging to these hospitals from various parts of the state for medical treatment on daily basis. As there is a huge gap between demand and supply, generating solar energy will be very useful, with about 300 sunny days in a year, Babu said.

The hospitals will not be completely dependent on the solar power, as the regular supply through power discoms will still be there. As long as the sun lasts, the supply will be through solar panels, after which a battery backup of four to eight hours would still be there to face emergency blackouts, he added.

Other major government hospitals and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) will be provided with solar power equipment soon. There are similar proposals to install solar equipment in Social and BC Welfare hostels as well as in Rajiv Vidya Mission and Kasturba Gandhi Balika hostels. Proposals have been sent to the government for getting the nod. The government is keen on promoting solar power and NREDCAP is focussing on promotion of energy conservation in a big way, he added.

The NREDCAP has also conducted energy audit of various government buildings for arriving at the power requirements and the equipment needed. Proposals have been sent for the sanction of 30 per cent Central government subsidy on the solar energy equipment as applicable to government buildings, Babu said.

Solar unit set up at Andhra CM's camp office...

Solar unit set up at Andhra CM's camp office...

The Andhra Pradesh chief minister’s camp office at Begumpet here will partially run on solar power hereafter and save 50 per cent power.

The incumbent, N Kiran Kumar Reddy, inaugurated the Solar Photovoltaic System installed over the roof of the building on Tuesday.

The total power load of the camp office was 60 KW, excluding air-conditioners. The installed capacity of solar system was 40 KW. The system works from 9 am to 5 pm on direct solar and 5 pm to 9 pm on battery charged by solar energy and then grid power. The saving on power bills will be about 50 per cent of the total bill.

The chief minister complimented the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) for its various new initiatives and directed the AP Transco to speed up the efforts for implementation of the AP State Solar Policy-2012, which has been announced recently.

The cumulative capacity sanctioned in the state including wind, solar, biomass-based, mini-hydro etc from the beginning was 4,357 MW and during 2012-13 and 2013-14 the total 1,444 MW capacity was installed. Out of this, wind energy achievement till 2010 had been 107 MW and in the last three years was 500 MW. Under the State Solar Power Policy, NREDCAP installed about 25 MW power plants on captive use and third party basis.

Labour minister Danam Nagender, marketing minister Mukesh Goud, principal secretary to chief minister Ajeya Kallam, AP Transco in-charge chairman and managing director Munindra, NREDCAP managing dirctor M Kamalakara Babu and other senior officials were present.

NREDCAP popularizing roof- top solar energy Applications in domestic House Holds sector of Andhra Pradesh...

NREDCAP popularizing roof- top solar energy Applications in domestic House Holds sector...

The New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP) is trying to popularize small roof-top solar systems in the domestic sector by emphasizing on the importance of energy savings and recovery of investments.

Through roof-top systems, people can tap the solar energy which is available in abundance (for 11 months in a year) and contribute any excess power to the State’s electricity grid. Awareness is being spread about that and it is yet to catch the fancy of consumers, said NREDCAP District Manager K. Srinivas.

A 3-KW roof-top solar system costs about Rs.1.50 lakh (excluding costs recoverable in the form of Central and State subsidies of Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively) and the intangible benefit it entails in the form of electricity (coal-based) saved is immense.

For instance, a household consuming 500 units of electricity drawn from the grid in a month will be charged Rs.4,500 at the rate of Rs.9 per unit. In this case, CO2 emissions at the macro-level are very high and there are many other costs incurred by the Government on coal-fired power.

Consumption of 15 units of solar energy per day (450 units per month) costs approximately Rs.4,500. The benefits are excess energy can be sent to the grid for cash credits given by AP Transco once in six months. The value of energy saved is nearly Rs 55,000 per year at which rate the investment made in the solar system can be fully recovered in three years. The life of a good quality solar panel is 25 years during which the cost of maintenance is almost zero, and there is no question of environmental pollution it being ‘green power’. Besides, a roof-top solar system can be set up in just about 300 square feet.

According to official sources, the daily demand of electricity in Krishna district is over 10 million units and assuming that even if 20,000 households (10 per cent of the 2,00,000 households in Vijayawada city) consuming more than 15 units of electricity per day switch over to solar energy, 3 lakh units of power can be saved.

It is a substantial amount of energy saving given the exorbitant costs at which thermal energy is being generated in the State on the back of a steep increase of 10 per cent in coal imports in the last two to three years.

“The benefits of solar energy are thereby pretty clear and one need not have any apprehension. In fact, exploiting solar energy is a very good social responsibility activity”, Mr. Srinivas said.
