State power utility Tehri Hydro Power Development Corp has sought advice from the World Bank to assess bids from Alstom Projects for a 444 MW hydroelectric project in Uttar Pradesh funded by the global development bank.
The power utility was prompted to seek World Bank advice after the latter banned two of the subsidiaries of French parent company Alstom SA on charges of alleged bribery.
"On hearing the news of World Bank ban on two units of Alstom SA, we referred the Alstom Projects letter of interest to World Bank for their advice as the project is funded by them," said DV Singh, technical director, THDC.
Alstom Projects had approached THDC for issuance of tender documents to pre-qualify for the Vishnugadh-Pipalkoti project in UP.
An official spokesperson of Alstom Projects refused to comment on the development.
On February 22, World Bank had barred two subsidiaries of French engineering company Alstom SA from participating in projects financed by the World Bank for three years for "improper payment" in a Zambian hydropower project.
World Bank has said Alstom made "improper payment" of 110,000 euros ($145,900) in 2002 to a company controlled by a former senior Zambian government official related to the Zambia power project financed by the bank.
