Alstom T&D India  selected  by GETCO to integrate renewable power to the Western grid...

Alstom T&D India  has been awarded two  contracts from  GETCO  (Gujarat Energy Transmission Company Limited)  to  supply 400KV/220KV/66KV   AIS substation  on turnkey basis,  located  at Charanka and Sankhari, to evacuate power from Asia's largest and Gujarat's first dedicated solar park.

The substations will also play a pivotal role in strengthening transmission network in the state of Gujarat by acting as the evacuation and nodal grid substations. Additionally it will also improve the energy flow in the western region of India.


Both the orders, worth approximately INR 1510 million (€22 million) involves  manufacture, supply, erection, testing,  and commissioning of 400 KV Substations with Alstom's key products like 400kV, 220 KV & 66 KV air insulated switchgear and related equipment, SCADA automation system along with  the civil works. All equipment  will be manufactured by Alstom's world-class manufacturing facilities in India.

The project is being developed under ADB1's Solar Energy schemes to catalyze 3000 MW  of solar power generation projects in ADB developing member countries. With solar energy poised to play a pivotal role, these projects holds immense significance in increasing the share of renewable energy and green energy mix in the country.

Solar PV Project on Narmada Canal in Gujarat to be inaugurated soon by Narendra Modi…

Close on heels of commencing use of wastelands in northern districts and rooftops in towns and cities, Gujarat is set to potentially use the existing 19,000 km-long network of Narmada canals across the State for setting up solar panels to generate power.

 

Power India in August 2011 captured that work on floating solar panels on Narmada Canal has been started. 

 

First phase of this project knows as Canal Solar Power Project near Chandrasan Village of Kadi Talika in Mehsana has already been commissioned and will be inaugurated by Mr. Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Gujarat CM on 24th April 2012.

 

As captured by Power India, Mr Narendar Modi, last week, has  inaugurated a 600-MW solar power project spread across 11 districts.

 

This included a 214MW Solar Power Park, the largest such generation centre at a single location in Asia. Also, Azure Power, leading independent power producer in solar sector, announced a 2.5 MW rooftops project in Gandhinagar.

 

Gujarat, which invests nearly Rs 2,000 crore an year on renewable energy, has attracted investments of Rs 9,000 crore so far on solar energy projects.

 

The pilot project has been developed on a 750-m stretch of the canal by Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) with support from Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), which owns and maintains the canal network.

Energy, water security

The pilot project will generate 16 lakh units of clean energy per annum and also prevent evaporation of 90 lakh litres of water annually from the canal. The concept will, therefore, tackle two of the challenges simultaneously by providing energy and water security.

The cost of per megawatt of solar power, in this case, is likely to be much less than the estimated Rs 10-11 crore, as the two banks of the canal will be used to cover the canal by installing solar power panel and the government will not have to spend much on creating basic infrastructure, including land acquisition .

Today, Gujarat has about 458 km of open Main Canal, while the total canal length, including sub-branches, is about 19,000 km at present.

When completed, the SSNNL's canal network will be about 85,000 km long.

Assuming a utilisation of only 10 per cent of the existing canal network of 19,000 km, it is estimated that 2,200 MW of solar power generating capacity can be installed by covering the canals with solar panels.

This also implies that 11,000 acres of land can be potentially conserved along with about 2,000 crore litres of water saved per annum.

Gujarat to introduce rooftop solar policy…

imageGujarat Government, after taking over has highest commercial solar installations in the country, is currently planning to introduce rooftop solar power plant policy. The rooftop solar plants will enable the people to produce their own electricity and earn money by selling surplus power to the grid.

 

Under this policy, Gandhinagar will be developed as India’s first model solar city. Gandhinagar is already having solar rooftop systems ranging from 1 kW to 150 kW at more than 150 locations aggregating to a capacity of 1.39 MW.  These cover a total of two acres of roof-top area, providing 1 per cent of the total energy consumption in the State capital. Also, the new building of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) is completely powered by solar energy.

Recently, the State Government floated a 5 MW rooftop programme on the PPP model in the capital, which is now being extended to five more cities and towns.

 

After dedicating to the nation an ambitious 605 MW solar power project spread across 10 districts, he said the policy would make the people self-reliant in power generation. Also, this would help them rent out their roofs for such plants and earn extra income to improve their living standards. The solar project has created an additional 30,000 jobs in the State.

The Gujarat Solar Park, set up with an investment of nearly Rs 9,000 crore on a 2,669 acre plot of wasteland in village Charanka in Patan district, is the largest part of the State’s power project with 214 MW of operational capacity, developed at a single location by private companies. The overall capacity of the Solar Park, when it expands to 5,000 acres, would be 500 MW, making it the largest solar farm in Asia.

The entire solar power project would produce 30 lakh units of clean energy daily, capable of electrifying 10 lakh households, and save 10 lakh tonnes equivalent of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

He said technology has reduced the cost of solar power production from Rs 15 to Rs 8.5 per unit in the last few years, making it affordable and on a par with gas-based power. Between 2001 and 2012, Gujarat increased its installed and under-development power generation capacity from 7,000 MW to 18,000 MW.

The US Consul-General in India, Mr Peter Haas, said his country had committed $500 million to the State for development of renewable sources of energy.

The State-promoted Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL), nodal agency for implementation of the Solar Park, has invested Rs 300 crore in creating infrastructure while Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Ltd (GETCO) has invested Rs 650 crore on an evacuation and transmission network, for which The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has extended a loan of Rs 500 crore to GETCO. For the proposed second Solar Park in the State, ADB would provide loan of $500 million.
